Internships related to topics in learning and inference W/M

About Idiap

We work in the general area of audio processing, but particularly when the audio signal contains speech. Our capabilities are centred around building models of production and perception that allow machines to mimic the capabilities of humans. Our models connect the audio signal with higher level semantics such as speech, language, affect and intent.

We embrace rigorous mathematical and Bayesian techniques to infer model parameters as well as the semantics required by the application. More speculatively, we also use such techniques to allow our models to make inference about the human production, perception and cognitive systems on which they are based.

The group title abbreviates to AI, emphasising a deep connection to the wider Artificial Intelligence field of our host institute. By the audio and speech focus we contribute to Idiap’s core Human-AI Teaming program; by the inference of biological function we aim to also contribute to the AI for Life program. In each case we benefit from colleagues with complementary skills, and hope to assist them in their own endeavours.

Job description

We are happy to open internships in collaboration with the wider research activities in the group. The topic is open, but should preferably align with one or more of our broad focusses; these are:

1. Physiologically plausible models of computation (i.e., spiking neural networks), of sensing and of communication.

2. Inference and synthesis of higher level semantics such as emotion, affect and charismatic traits.

3. Probabilistically sound models of computation (Bayesian inference), especially in the context of the above.

The group is rooted in speech processing, but the application area can be more general audio, human or animal communication. It can also incorporate other modalities.

Internships are typically for three to six months, depending on the wider context, and attract a modest salary (for Switzerland) of CHF 3,000 per month (with masters) / CHF 2,600 CHF (without masters).

Pragmatic considerations will be applied for non-Swiss/EU/UK nationals as work permit applications take around four months.

Sought profile

The ideal candidate should at least have a bachelors degree incorporating physics, engineering or computer science. The internship can either fall between periods of study, for instance if the candidate is waiting for a doctoral position, or can form part of master or doctoral study. By contrast, an internship is typically not appropriate when the candidate intends to take a position in industry afterwards.
