About NAVER LABS Europe
NAVER LABS Europe is part of the R&D division of NAVER, Korea’s leading Internet portal and a global tech company with a range of services that include search, commerce, content, fintech, robotics and cloud.
The position
We are looking for an intern to help develop a new family of retrieval models for code and multimodal data. The intern will be responsible for training models on code and multimodal datasets, experimenting with novel architectures, integrating existing data sources, analysing failure cases, and proposing improvements to enhance both performance and latency.
More broadly, our team explores the intersection of search, LLMs, and agents.
We value curiosity and a strong desire for deep understanding, particularly when it comes to model evaluation and experimentation.
The candidate will join the Retrieval and Memory team, which developed the SPLADE family of sparse retrievers. Recent publications from our team include:
- PISCO: Pretty Simple Compression for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (ACL’25)
- Provence: Efficient and Robust Context Pruning for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (ICLR’25)
- BERGEN: A Benchmarking Library for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (EMNLP’24)
About the research team
In the Action group, we develop AI-driven decision-making capabilities that enable embodied agents to safely execute complex tasks in dynamic environments. To achieve autonomy in real-world everyday spaces, robots must learn from their interactions, understand how to best execute tasks specified by non-expert users, and do so in a safe and reliable manner. This requires sequential decision-making skills that integrate machine learning, adaptive planning, and control in uncertain environments, as well as the ability to solve hard combinatorial optimization problems. Our research combines expertise in reinforcement learning, computer vision, robotic control, sim-to-real transfer, large multimodal foundation models, and neural combinatorial optimization to design AI-based architectures and algorithms that enhance robot autonomy and robustness when completing complex tasks in constantly changing environments.
What we're looking for (depending on your career stage)
- Phd or Master Level, strong coding skills required.
- Proficiency with Large Language Models (LLMs) is required, including their training and fine-tuning
- Pytorch, transformers library
What we offer
-
Ambitious, multidisciplinary projects with experienced international research teams (30 years research in AI and related fields).
-
Flexible work/life balance.
-
An equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion.
-
A great location that blends urban life, technology and nature with stunning views of the Alpine mountain ranges (Belledonne, Chartreuse, Vercors).
All applications will be carefully considered, even if not all required skills are met. We value diverse backgrounds and the potential of each candidate, and we offer training to support the development of necessary skills.
