Post description
Role Purpose:
The Cable Route Engineer is an essential technical role within the ASN Marine Directorate, supporting ASN in planning, designing, manufacturing and installing submarine cables across the world’s oceans.
Working on turnkey supply projects, the role oversees the Cable Route Study and Marine Survey phases
within the various project timelines.
Generation of the Cable Route Study (CRS) report includes performing Desk Top Study (DTS) research,
Site-Visits to future cable landings, identifying threats (natural and manmade) and evaluating risks to the
cable system. This enables creation of Route Position List (RPL) to define initial route and engineering
design.
During the Marine Survey operations phase, the Cable Route Engineer oversees the planning, mobilisation, and operational activities of subcontracted hydrographic survey operations, which use full ocean depth capable vessels for most of the cable route, and smaller vessels inshore and topographic
activities at cable landing locations.
The Cable Route Engineer liaises with offshore teams to ensure the quality of operations, and to receive
survey data deliverables that enable the creation of post-survey RPLs, an essential output for ASN’s
manufacturing teams to use.
The Cable Route Engineer role is a highly skilled and key role within ASN’s Marine directorate, enabling
all pre-manufacturing decisions to be made about cable routing, manufacturing design and installation
strategy.

Responsibilities of a Cable Route Engineer:
• Office based role with responsibility for all aspects of Cable Route Studies (desk top studies, site
visits), database compilation and chart production using ESRI ARCGIS software.
• Carrying out Cable Route Engineering using Makai Plan (on Geomedia GIS) to generate Route
Position Lists (RPLs) and Straight-Line Diagrams (SLDs) for cable manufacture and installation.
• Reviewing and performing quality control of the Marine Survey Reports delivered to ASN prior to
Customer delivery.
• Offshore work and worldwide travel (site visits, customer & sub-contractor meetings, survey
operations) as required or requested.
• Working as a member of the Route Engineering team, seeing projects through from initial feasibility
studies to marine survey and up to installation phase. Working within the ASN Marine directorate
and supporting the ASN Project Management directorate.
